Millions of Americans wake up every morning with a grimace, knowing that they are so deep in credit card debt they feel like getting away from it would be tougher than escaping the depths of hell itself. I am here, however, to tell you that this is simply not the case. Whether you are one or a hundred thousand dollars in debt there is hope for your soul, and your credit score. In order to escape debt you must be diligent and follow several steps, and many of them are not going to be easy. However, if you can follow these steps and change your financial lifestyle you will find yourself floating on an interest-free cloud.

The first step you have to take if you are serious about getting out of debt is simple, destroy your credit cards! This seems obvious, but it is the most vital step out of all of them. There is no way for you to escape credit card debt if you keep charging items to your card. Trust me, it’s not possible. After you have told your credit cards to take a hike you can begin to work them off. Transfer all your balances from high interest accounts to lower interest accounts. If this is impossible to do for all your credit card debts, do it with the debt you can, and begin to pay off the highest interest accounts first.

When attempting to escape debts from several sources, the way to do it is entirely up to you. Many people prefer to pay off the biggest debts first, and leave the smaller ones for when they are done. Others find it agreeable to pay off the smallest debts and work their way up, gaining psychological victories along the way.

Personally I would advocate paying off your debts with the highest interest levels first. I feel this is the most successful and intelligent way to escape debt. If you have four different accounts, and one account has you paying such a high interest level it is more than your other accounts total balance, pay that one first! Ignoring it and paying smaller accounts is only going to cost you more money in the long run.

As you continue on your debt relief quest you must keep detailed accounts of your progress. This will help you stay on top of your situation and prevent you from having a very damaging relapse. As you begin to pay off your different accounts you can close them up and continue. Your main financial focus should be to finish paying off your credit cards, so if you stumble across a little extra cash, throw it at your credit card debt. The more you pay now the sooner you will be debt free.

Once you have erased all of your debt you need to begin to live debt free. Many of the good habits you have learned while escaping debt are still things you want to live by. Not only did you pay off all of your credit card debt, but you avoided adding even more debt during that time. This is proof that you are living a lifestyle that is going to help keep you out of debt, so you don’t want to change this too much.

Continue to reduce the usage of your credit card. Occasionally it is okay, of course, but never borrow more than you can afford. If you start to get into that situation again all of your hard work will be for naught, and you are going to have to do it all again in the future. Take advantage of the tools you have learned and put them to use for a successful and debt-free financial future.

Credit Card Debt ReductionOne of the most successful ways to rapidly reduce credit card debt is to ignore your minimum payments.  Now while that may sound remarkably contradictory, wait a minute and allow me to elaborate.  Minimum payments are generally the only thing that consumers notice when they are looking at their statements and very frequently only reserve enough funds in their budget to meet the minimum requirements, but by just saving a little more money to spend towards your card payment you can reduce your debt at a much faster rate.  It is very easy to rack up a high amount of debt on a credit card, especially in these economically troubling times.  What many people fail to realize is that it can also be simple to reduce the debt as well.

First Step: Consider the Possibility of Reducing Credit Card Debt

Steps to Reduce Credit Card Addiction

You are certainly not alone. Millions of people around the world struggle with debt, and much of this stems from spending money they simply do not have.  One of the most common ways to spend money that isn’t yours is with the use of a credit card.  They have become a necessity for many things in everyday living in the modern age, but they are very easy to abuse and can rapidly spiral out of control, leaving you with nothing but a mountain of debt and a massive headache.  However, a little patience and some self-control can go a long ways in reducing your dependency on your credit card, because for many people the use of a credit card has become an addiction.

While this article is not meant to be all fire and brimstone, this is certainly a serious topic.  It is very easy to see an item we want and cannot afford and say, well I will just put it on my credit card and pay it off once I get paid again.  However, as we discussed in our Steps to Stay Out of Debt article, this brings up several problems.  Unexpected expenditures can arise between the time you buy that item with your credit card and your next paycheck, and this can push back your payments for weeks, resulting in interest charges that mean you’re paying more for the item than it actually even cost.

Fighting your desire to spend is very difficult, and just like any other addiction it cannot be taken lightly.  While this is not as severe as a narcotics addiction or something that can cause physical harm, it can have very similar life-altering effects.  Getting into debt is a downward spiral that can leave you feeling helpless and hopeless, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Now, how do you do this?  Well, it sounds remarkably easy and obvious, but it is much harder than many people think.  The basic ground rule to do your best to always follow is simple, do not spend what you don’t have.  If that new pair of sneakers is something you must add to your wardrobe immediately but you just don’t have the money right now, hold off!  The odds are very favorable that most of those items will still be available in a week or so once you get paid again.  Be patient and strict with your money and you will begin to notice your dependency on your credit card will start to wane.

There is no better feeling than getting out of debt, and once you’re there you certainly do not want to fall back into the same pit of despair once again.  Flex your self-control and persistence towards your credit card and you will be able to take control of your credit card debt instead of having your debt control you.
